Quiz\u00e1 ya conozcas los efectos nocivos de fumar para salud del ser humano, pero lo que pocas veces se comenta es c\u00f3mo dicha actividad afecta al medio ambiente y la vida marina, comencemos recordando que para la fabricaci\u00f3n de un cigarro comercial se requiere el uso de sustancias qu\u00edmicas -alrededor de 7,000- de las cuales al menos 50 son cancer\u00edgenas para el ser humano, mientras que otras tantas son reconocidas como t\u00f3xicas para la vida marina y los mantos acu\u00edferos, adem\u00e1s de venenosas para los animales que entran en contacto con ellas, pero \u00bf<\/strong><\/span>c\u00f3mo sucede esto?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Una vez que el cigarro se ha terminado, el ciudadano com\u00fan suele arrojarlo a la calle o depositarlo en cualquier lugar no adecuado para su almacenamiento, por lo que el filtro termina en lugares como el drenaje por hasta 10 a\u00f1os.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 son tan da\u00f1inos para el ambiente y los animales los filtros de cigarro?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Analicemos un poco la industria del tabaco, de los 6.3 billones de cigarros que se vendieron en el 2012, estudios estiman que alrededor de 4.5 billones de filtros y restos de cigarro fueron arrojados arbitrariamente al medio ambiente. La Organizaci\u00f3n para la Conservaci\u00f3n de los Oc\u00e9anos (Ocean Conservancy) reporta que en 27 a\u00f1os de labor limpiando los mares, se han recolectado 52 millones de restos de cigarros, y \u00e9stos representan entre el 19 y el 38% de los objetos de desecho encontrados en las costas, de hecho en el 2012 los desechos de la industria del tabaco fueron la principal causa de contaminaci\u00f3n de nuestros mares.<\/span><\/p>\n

En contacto con el agua los filtros se convierten en una fuente peligrosa de toxicidad, ya que tanto los filtros como las hojas de tabaco empleadas en los cigarros contienen altas cantidades de pesticidas, herbicidas, insecticidas, fungicidas y roedocidas que una vez en contacto con el agua, comienzan a contaminarla.<\/span><\/p>\n
